A steel truss refers to a truss made of steel. In the roof structures, crane beams, bridges and hydraulic gates of industrial and civil buildings, steel trusses are often used as the main load-bearing components. All kinds of towers, such as mast towers, TV towers and transmission line towers, are commonly used space steel trusses composed of three-sided, four-sided or multi-sided planar trusses.

The most commonly used is the plane truss, which is essentially a lattice beam under the action of lateral loads. Compared with solid-web steel beams, steel trusses are characterized by chords instead of flanges and webs instead of webs. Rods and chords are connected to each other; sometimes the members can be welded (or otherwise connected) directly to each other without the use of gusset plates. In this way, the bending moment of the plane truss as a whole is expressed as the axial compression and tension of the upper and lower chords, and the shear force is expressed as the axial compression or tension of each web member.
Compared with the solid web beam, the steel truss uses sparse web members instead of the integral web, and the members mainly bear the axial force, which can often save steel and reduce the weight of the structure. This makes steel trusses particularly suitable for structures with large spans or heights. In addition, the steel truss is also convenient to be made into various shapes according to different usage requirements. Moreover, since the amount of steel used for the webs is less than that of the webs of the solid webs, the steel trusses can often be made to have a larger height and thus have a larger rigidity. However, the steel truss has many members and nodes, the structure is more complicated, and the manufacturing is more labor-intensive.
Among the steel trusses, beam-type simply supported trusses are the most commonly used. Because the force of this truss is clear, the internal force of the member is not affected by the subsidence of the support and the temperature change, the structure is simple, and the installation is convenient; but the amount of steel used is slightly larger. Rigid frame and multi-span continuous steel trusses can save steel, but their internal forces are more sensitive to the influence of bearing subsidence and temperature changes, and require higher manufacturing and installation accuracy, so they are less used. In the steel frame of a single-storey factory building, the roof steel truss is often combined with the steel column to form a single-span or multi-span rigid frame, which has a large horizontal stiffness and can better meet the requirements of large cranes or vibration loads. Continuous steel trusses are often used in structures such as bridges with larger spans and mast tower structures with fiber ropes. Arched steel trusses are also often used in long-span public buildings and bridges. Cantilevered steel trusses are also often used in offshore platforms and some housing structures. All kinds of towers belong to the cantilever structure.
Connection method:
Steel trusses can be welded, common bolted, high-strength bolted or riveted. Welding is the most widely used; ordinary bolted connections are often used for detachable structures, transmission towers and support systems; high-strength bolted connections are often used for site connections of heavy steel trusses; riveting is used for heavy steel trusses subjected to large dynamic loads. Replaced by high-strength bolted connections.
Application:
Trusses are widely used in steel structures, such as roofs (roof trusses, etc.) and crane beams (ie crane trusses) of industrial and civil buildings, bridges, cranes (its towers, beams or booms, etc.), hydraulic gates, In offshore oil production platforms, steel trusses are often used as the main components of load-bearing structures. Various types of steel grids, which are widely used in the roof structure of large-span public buildings, belong to space steel trusses. Various types of towers, such as TV, power transmission, drilling, crane towers and mast towers, often use space steel trusses composed of three-sided, four-sided or multi-sided planar trusses.
